After completing two & half years of coursework (phase 1) and one year of candidacy (phase 2), you will have to do many steps to reach your dissertation defense & graduate.  Below is a simplified list of examples on some of those steps:

  • Dissertation Committee: form a committee (not as simple as you may think)
  • Dissertation research proposal: write a detailed proposal giving justification, need, research methodology, research instruments, research questions, etc
  • Committee Approval: edit & revise proposal until approved by committee
  • IRB Proposal: write an IRB proposal & get it approved by the university
  • Conduct the Research:  follow the approved IRB procedures to collect the data
  • Analyze the data: quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods, this process will take time
  • Dissertation Chapters: chapter outline, structure, following APA standards & university requirements, etc
  • Dissertation Chapters Drafts: edit & revise… edit & revise… edit & revise…
  • Committee Feedback: meet with individual committee members & make updates to dissertation as needed
  • Committee Approval: one day the dissertation drafts will reach final quality and be approved
  • University Approval: gain approval of final dissertation meeting university requirements
  • Schedule an oral defense
  • University checklist: apply for graduation, pay all fees, etc
  • Presentation: make a comprehensive presentation that summarizes the 347 page dissertation
  • Defense: present and defend the dissertation
  • Pass Defense
  • Submit final Dissertation: follow university protocol to submit final draft & required forms
  • Graduate: you can get some sleep now

The above may sound simple (or not), yet each step takes time and has more details involved. Welcome to the world of a PhD 🙂
